The rise of AI translators

 

 One of the biggest innovations AI has brought for us is the break of the language barrier. Translation technology is growing rapidly, enabling users to utilize a wider range of higher-quality functions that no one could have imagined in the old days. According to the 2021 report by Global Market Insights, the AI translation technology market is predicted to grow at an average rate of 25% from $650 million in 2020 to $3 billion in 2027.

 

 The history of translation can be traced back to Al-Kindi’s Manuscript on Deciphering Cryptographic Messages. After that, going through inventions with the arrival of computers in the mid-twentieth century, including CAT(Computer-assisted translation), MT(Machine translation), and TMS(Translation management systems), translation technology has reached the current level. 

 

 Now one can translate not only simple text but also lengthy papers and documents according to the desired format. Progress is also being made at a fast pace in terms of voice translation. In August 2023, Meta(former Facebook) launched an AI model that can voice translate up to 100 different languages. In-ear translators, or translator earbuds can help the user in real-time. One product released by Timekettle company can translate into 40 languages and recognizes over 93 accents with a 95% reported accuracy rate. Spotify, one of the largest audio streaming and media service providers globally, began to allow listeners to hear the podcasts in their native language in the original podcaster’s voice using an AI program. Amazon, a major global IT platform leading AI voice programs, is now providing users with 48 languages in Alexa, its own AI secretary. 

 

 The rapid growth(expansion) of translation technology, however, also has resulted in voices of concern. The AI-powered features such as that of Spotify can bring about the danger of exploitation, a so-called deepfake. It also threatens specific job markets like the voice actors. 

 

 Yet the current technologies are not flawless enough to perfectly substitute the quality of human professionals, with some mistranslations and unnatural phrases. To conclude, the key is to develop AI translation technology while being careful to prevent the drawbacks.
