▲On May 4th, Michuhol Foreign Language High School held a sports day. It was the first sports day after the cancellation of the mask mandate. It allowed students to have a clearer view of all the happy smiles. Both the freshmen, who had just gone through their first exams in high school, and the juniors, who are starting their journey with renewed enthusiasm, anticipated this day. Filled with excitement, the students came out from the dormitories, dressed in uniforms, took photos together, and waited for the start of the event. A parade that showed the characteristics of each department with music announced the beginning of the sports day.
In the morning, eight-way jump rope, tug-of-war, and pole-relay preliminaries were held. In particular, 30 students from each department participated in the tug-of-war, and it was beautiful to cheer for each department. A male student in the first year of the Spanish Department who passed the tug-of-war preliminary round said, “We were able to become the best because everyone in our department did their best and united their strength. The characteristic of tug-of-war is that it is a sport that cannot be won by only a certain person working hard, so it was possible to win because everyone worked hard together during the game. Also, the secret of this unity was communication. In tug-of-war, everyone should unite and pull their strength in an instant to win. Through communication, we were able to find that moment and gather everyone’s strength at once, which led us to the win.” The teachers also enthusiastically supported the students. One teacher encouraged their students by beating a drum, and another teacher participated in the tug-of-war for himself.
After the preliminaries for the relay race, two special matches of Michuhol Foreign Language High School was held. It was a dodgeball and soccer game between the Western and Eastern language disciplines. Dodgeball was the girls’ game and 7 representative students from each class participated, 28 students total, from each the West and East language disciplines. In addition, freshman male students played the first half of the soccer game, and the second half was played by junior male students, with nine players each from the West and the East disciplines. At Michuhol Foreign Language High School, where Western and Eastern language majors share a hallway, this special game became an opportunity to unite students who use the same hallway once again.
The lunch break was followed by performances by dance clubs D-day and MIC. D-day performed a variety of lively and exciting songs such as IVE's "Kitsch," "I AM" and Girls' Generation's "Way to Go," which made the students enjoy the competition even more. MIC, another dance club, showed their outstanding dance skills by performing exciting and cool songs such as BTS's "Run BTS" and BLACKPINK's "BOOMBAYA". The lunchtime dance performance made the atmosphere of the sports meeting even more exciting, and students who watched the performance said, "The stage was really cool and my friends practiced a lot," and "I felt energized when I saw the stage."
After lunch, the final rounds of bong kyeju, tug of war, and team jump rope continued. The students showed great unity in each class through these events, especially in the team jump rope. A second-year French student commented, "There were some small arguments between my friends during the preparation, but I think we were able to build unity through understanding and encouraging each other. Even if we didn't win first place, we were able to gain more valuable memories from the fact that we did something together with our friends."
After a few matches, it was time for the much-anticipated Random Play Dance. All the first and second graders gathered in a circle and danced to the music they knew, and the teacher said that the participation rate of each class affects the cheering, so all the students were eager to participate. Even though the Random Play Dance was held for the first time this year, it received a great response due to the enthusiastic participation of the students, and even those who do not know how to dance well followed their friends, making it a time for everyone to enjoy. This was followed by the final race, which was the crown jewel of the sports meeting, so all eyes were on the students. The students who participated in the race did a great job of overcoming their nerves and doing their best, and their classmates also came to the front to cheer on their friends with excitement.
The Games concluded with team performance. Each grade was divided into teams by major language, and all the participating teams prepared various exciting and cool songs and performances. The second-year Chinese department danced to a popular Chinese song on TikTok, and the first-year Japanese department danced to a cute Japanese song. In addition to this, all the students gave unique and high-quality performances, which made the sports meeting fun until the end. With these performances, the sports meeting came to a close, but it will live on in the memories of the students as a fun event. Michuhol Foreign Language High School is characterized by the fact that the classes are divided by major, which has the advantage that students of the same major can get to know each other more closely during the athletic competition, and the relationship between the first and second-year students of the same major can also be strengthened. I hope that students can get to know each other better through this opportunity and build a bond, and I hope that next year's sports meeting will be as eventful and enjoyable as this year.
