School organizations striving for MCH: School Ambassadors, RAON, WEBS

Focusing on 3 organizations in MCH

Michuhol Foreign Language High School has many clubs and organizations that engage in various school activities. These activities provide opportunities for students to develop their skills, showcase their abilities, and grow as themselves. In this article, we will focus on 3 organizations, the Student Ambassadors, who publicize and promote our school, RAON, a judicial organization that guides students to follow school rules and lead to a proper school life, and WEBS, a broadcasting club that helps events run smoothly. To learn more about their activities, roles, and behind-the-scenes efforts, we interviewed members of each department. We prepared a total of five questions: what kind of group it is, how its members are selected, what main activities and roles they have, how they influence the school, and what efforts the members make to fulfill their roles.

About the School Ambassadors

First, we interviewed a second-grade French major, Kang Gunhyeok, to get vivid experiences and insights about the Student Ambassadors. He defined the Student Ambassadors as a group which has the ultimate purpose to promote Michuhol Foreign Language High School to the outside world. The team consists of 36 people in total, including teachers who assist the students. He also explained that the ambassadors focus on increasing the demand for school enrollment of Michuhol Foreign Language High School by providing information about school life, curriculums, and more.

When asked about the selection process, he explained that members are chosen through an interview conducted by two teachers, the head of the Student Ambassadors, and the vice head of the Student Ambassadors. The interview includes the process of introducing themselves, showing their skills and talents, and sharing creative ideas on how to promote the school.

He said that the main activities and roles of the Student Ambassadors include organizing and hosting admission information sessions held in July and November. These events have a very high participation rate, as they offer middle school students who are interested in attending the school an opportunity to learn about it firsthand. The ambassadors are responsible for the overall organization and orderliness of these events and strive to make them successful. Another major activity is creating the school's brochures. These brochures are distributed to all middle schools in Incheon and play an important role in providing information to students. The Student Ambassadors also act as “models” by appearing in photos for the brochure, and they produce short-form videos, v-logs, and introductory videos for each language major to promote the school in various ways.

When asked about the impact of the ambassadors on the school, he said they have a significant influence, especially on enrollment. The ambassadors provide prospective students with an experience of what school life is like, and by approaching them in a friendly and relatable way, they often positively influence students’ decisions in applying. In fact, he mentioned that some first-year students actually decided to enroll at Michuhol Foreign Language High School because of the ambassadors' activities, which shows the role of School Ambassadors in enhancing the school’s reputation and value.

Finally, regarding the efforts of the Student Ambassadors, he said that the ambassadors always work hard to ensure that the promotion process runs smoothly. In particular, they support events behind the scenes organizing seats and arranging items before or during important events. He said that they always try to be approachable to students and emphasized that all PR-related events are the result of their consistent efforts.

Next, we had an interview with a second-grade Chinese major, Hong Saerom, who is the representative of RAON, the School Judiciary. She defined RAON, the School Judiciary, as an autonomous organization which serves as a leading role in maintaining school discipline. This disciplinary actor plays an important role in helping students to reflect on their behavior and guides them towards a responsible and positive school life. It consists of 8 students, in particular 2 judges, 2 prosecutors, 2 attorneys, and 2 clerks who are also in charge of communicating with the juries. Each position is composed of 1 first-grader and 1 second-grader.

For the next question, we asked about the selection process. For the first procedure, candidates have to apply by submitting their documents. Secondly, they get to have an in-person interview with the teachers. Members are finally elected through the appointment of the school principal. Through these processes, students with responsibility and fairness are selected as members of the school judiciary.

She answered that the main role of the organization is holding a student trial for students who have received 10 or more penalty points in the dormitory or at school. The School Judiciary manages the overall process of the court and takes care of not only deciding appropriate disposals but also checking whether the students actually carried out the disposition. In addition, it also revises the disposal rules every year to guarantee fair and just disciplinary actions.

Given the question of the influence of the judiciary, she answered that it plays an important role in maintaining school orders and elevating responsibilities of individuals. Also, it provides students with the opportunity to reflect on their behaviors and encourages them to abide by the school rules. Since Michuhol Foreign Language High School is a community where students spend a long time together, the judiciary is in full support of the students so that they follow the established rules and maintain an orderly school life.

Finally, she answered that members are taking on specific responsibilities during the trial process. Prosecutors demand appropriate disciplinary measures regarding the judiciary rules. Attorneys try their best to prevent any unfair disciplinary actions considering various aspects including the circumstance that led the student to receive penalty points. Judges try to make a fair and reasonable decision by reviewing differed opinions of prosecutors, attorneys, and juries. Clerks document all the court processes and convey the juries’ opinions to the judges. She added that all members sincerely work towards the ultimate goal of helping students brought to the trial.
