MCH Interview with the Managers of School Clubs 2

Club 2 MASC's performance

Unlike Club 1, whose focus is conducting academic research in students’ career fields, Club 2 promotes students' hobbies and artistry. Students can choose from clubs that suit their interests and will allow them to demonstrate their skills. This year, the activities in these clubs have become important. Special activities that educate students about specific anniversaries and current issues will be held in the 2 clubs. To learn about this and more, we interviewed three of the Club 2 managers, whose clubs best captured the characteristics of MCH. Through these interviews, we were able to see the various abilities of our students that are not fully demonstrated in other school activities.  We were also able to see the enthusiasm with which MCH students work in their areas of interest. In addition, we learned about the key education activities that will be held this year.

Club 2: CC(Connecting Class) Manager Jiwon Jung

△Could you give us a brief introduction to your club?

Jiwon: CC is a club that conducts international exchanges with Australian schools via video to give our club members a chance to engage in a cultural exchange and improve their English skills. Through these activities and by being exposed to more of the world, I have broadened my horizons have made new friends from other countries. This is the only club in MCH in which students can talk directly to teachers and students from other countries and give presentations to each other.

△Could you tell us about your plans for the key education activities in 2023?

Jiwon: Even though Korea's status has improved, the word "Korea" still reminds foreigners of war, division, etc. I accepted these widely held beliefs which are circulating on social media, which is an unfortunate reality as a Korean, but I felt I could do something that change this perception. So, we held an activity on July 14th, a day before Liberation Day which is an important holiday for Koreans, to briefly explain the reality of the North-South division to our Australian friends. We also quizzed MCH students on their own history as well. Through these activities, I believe that we will be able to correct the false rumors about the North and the South and cultivate a greater historical awareness in MCH students.

△Please describe the exchange activities with the international students this year. Please also tell us what topics you will be focusing on.

Jiwon: Like last year, we are using Zoom to interact with the Australian students and teachers. So far, we have introduced our school, our country our culture and ourselves; the Australian students have also introduced their culture. We will also be conducting interesting activities through a small gift exchange called Culture Box.

△What activities have you done so far that have impressed you about the characteristics of our school?

Jiwon: As it is a foreign language high school, the biggest advantage seems to be that the students can speak English directly with native speakers. The students love languages, and it seems that the members were happy that they could use English to make Australian friends.

Club 2: MASC Manager, Shieun Lee

△Could you briefly introduce your club?

Shieun: MASC is the only musical club on campus. We cultivate artistic literacy by expressing ourselves in various languages in this era of globalization. We analyze and create comprehensive arts and works, promote harmony among students through performances, and express in languages that connects people.

△Could you tell us about your plans for the key education activities in 2023?

Shieun: A short musical drama will be produced on the theme of Hangeul Day. The whole play uses pure Korean words and expressions. The content flow will be composed using Korean traditional fairy tales and literary works, and the songs will begin by using pure Korean words and Hangul. I think the advantage of our club is that it makes certain topics more interesting for students. As such, I tried to reach out to the students by composing a drama about Hangeul Day and pure Korean words.

△It's impressive that you're doing plays in languages other than English. Could you tell us what motivated you to do this?

Shieun: I thought it would be meaningful to MCH students to use the languages they’ve learned if they composed a play using all four major languages taught at our school. Also, as students living in this global era, they wanted to express themselves through multiple languages.

Club 2: WEBS (World Educational Broadcasting System) Manager, Jinseo Yang

△Could you briefly introduce your club?
Jinseo: WEBS, the broadcasting department of MCH, is a club that supports various in-school activities such as academic festivals, concerts, and Biryuse. Through these activities, we aim to ensure that school events proceed smoothly while expanding our knowledge of broadcasting. Unlike the other 2 clubs, WEBS is given a lot of volunteer time and participates in the most important activities at the school.

△ Could you tell us about your plans for the key education activities in 2023?

Jinseo: Unlike the other 2 clubs, the broadcasting department has its own camera, which is advantageous for video production activities. And, I gained expertise because there is a separate department in charge of cameras. In fact, we are also doing activities to shoot different kinds of videos, so we can produce high-quality videos.

△The WEBS broadcasting club is in charge of most tasks, hosts various festivals and events, and above all, is a club that many students are curious and interested in. Which activity is the hardest but most influential among the club activities?

Jinseo: The most difficult but influential activity is the major language academic festival. This kind of festival is held only in foreign language high schools, and teachers and students prepare with great effort, so the performance comes with some pressure. And, it's physically burdensome because you cannot sit down for most of the three-day preparation process. This process shows the other students the great work the broadcasting department does and allows them to get the recognition they deserve.

△You must have seen the all kinds of activities through our variety of school events. What are the strengths and abilities of our students through club activities?
Jinseo: Through club activities, I think the strength of our students is that they are very good at a wide range of activities such as music, dance, and academic festivals. It was surprising that in addition to the great academic ability that MCH students have, they also have artistic ability.
