MFLHS Student Council, What Are They Doing Behind the Scenes?

▲On May 9, Lee Ji-min, the student vice president, was interviewed about the student council. The interview covers what the student council has done so far, what it hasn't done, and why. It also included tips for students who want to apply to the student council. If you're an MCH student who wants to know about the student council's experiences and feel more connected to the student body, read this article.

The 13th Student Council Administration

There is a group of people who work hard for Michuhol Foreign Language High School and its students, both behind the scenes and in front of the scenes. This is the student council. Today, however, there seems to be a lack of communication and contact between students and the student council. According to the "Awareness Survey on Student Council" conducted on June 1 among 20 students of Michuhol Foreign Language High School, only 15% of students replied that they are familiar with the role of the student council, and 35% of students replied that they are not familiar with it. On the other hand, students' interest in the student council was high, with 25% being very interested and 55% being interested. This means that students' interest in the student council is high, but they do not know much about the student council. Therefore, we interviewed Ji-min Lee (2-2), the student vice president, to ask her about student council administration.

Interview 1: Focusing on the role of Student Council Administration

Please introduce Student Council Administration

Ji-min: Student Council Administration is the department that implements projects and is responsible for various aspects of the school. It can be understood that the existing role of the student council remains in the form of the administration with the addition of the legislative and judicial branches, which are mainly responsible for matters related to the autonomous rules (MCH has adopted a three-power system since last year). The thirteenth administration consists of one student president, two student vice presidents, a first grade president and a second grade president, and six departments for a total of 17 members. However, since it is difficult for third-year students to participate in student council activities, the actual number of active members is 8.

How does the student council project work?

Ji-min: Once the administration is organized, the members of the administration plan the projects they want to implement, write a budget, and send it to the General Affairs Department. The General Affairs Department then goes through the first review, which sometimes includes consulting with the teacher. In this process, many projects were canceled. However, if it passes, the plan of the project goes to the legislature and the legislature discusses whether the budget of the project is appropriate and whether there are any problems with the project. After discussions, the plan is sent back to the administration with amendments. The project can be implemented only after going through a series of reviews and meetings like this.

What are some of the major projects the administration worked on this year?

Ji-min: Just to name a few of the major projects that have been implemented this year, the installation of aprons in the foodservice facility, which was a pledge of the second grade president last year, has been implemented. Also, the School Activities Department has been working on a club calendar. Both of these are hard-working projects, so I hope students will be interested in them.

What are some of the major projects the administration is planning to work on this year?

Ji-min: There are a lot of projects in the works, but I can't say for sure that they will happen because the consultation with the legislature hasn't finished yet. However, the installation of air fresheners in the restrooms has been in preparation since last year, and we will proceed as soon as the battery issue of air fresheners is resolved. Also, the student community,’MCH Everytime’, is working hard to prepare, and No Plastic Day, which is planned by the Environmental Safety Department, is also scheduled. I hope many students participate actively when the project is implemented.

What are some projects that have failed to proceed?

Ji-min: One of my pledges, ‘Making MCH fall hoodie’, was not carried out. I wrote a project plan and submitted it, but the school’s governing body said that there were many elements that were lacking because it is a complicated process to carry out projects related to school uniforms.

Interview 2: Focusing on Student Council Interview

This survey shows that around 65% of MFLHS students are willing to sign up for this year’s MCH Student Council Administration member recruitment. Therefore, in the aspect of our readers’ interests, questions regarding this year’s recruitment were conducted as well. The questions were focused on tips and information on the interview, and how our interviewee became elected as the Student Vice President.

As we all know, there are a lot of students who wish to become a member of the Student Council. Can you tell us about the procedure or some tips for the interview?

Ji-min: After the student council administration election is performed around the end of the semester, the elected student president and vice president will play the role as the interviewer. A cover letter will be required beforehand, and the interview questions will be arranged based on the received cover letters. If you want to take the interview naturally and fluently, it would be desirable to write your real experiences instead of lies, wouldn’t it? In addition, when writing your cover letter, it’s important to make sure you read all of the instructions. Last year, for example, there were many of those who put more weight in stressing their capabilities instead of stating what projects they wanted to undertake in the student council. They couldn’t pass the 1st selection process. I’m rooting for everyone. Good luck!

What do you think is the main reason you got elected [as the vice president?]

Ji-min: It is embarrassing to say it myself. In fact, I never expected to become elected for real. If there is a reason why I was chosen, I believe it’s because I put in a lot of effort.

During school life, students could have things to ask the student council directly. Would there be a way to directly contact the school council in such cases?

Ji-min: Currently, there are a few methods. One is speaking with an acquainted student council member or the class president and vice class president who can contact student council executives through a KakaoTalk group chat. Another is contacting through the student council’s official Instagram account. For students not to feel pressured, we’re currently working on including this in the process of designing the MCH community website. Please look forward to it, and stay tuned to our official Instagram!

Is there anything more about the school council you would like to let the readers know?

Ji-min: Although everyone is familiar with the name ‘Student Council’, I think not many are aware of how it actually works, or what is currently going on in it. The group named ‘Student Council’ is in charge of school matters, but that doesn’t change that all of us, in essence, are still students. As so, please don’t feel distant or have any grudge against the student council. Your support means the world to us. The student council will always work hard for our school as well.

Final Comment

As the interviewee mentioned, the name student council might feel just a bit too far and abstract to the majority. It could have many causes, including that there isn’t a lot of detailed information concerning the student council available to the public. Therefore, it is also true that sometimes students might doubt the value and worth of the student council. However, many things are done below the surface by student council members, though we might not see their effort all the time. Many projects come and go, with also those with one’s passion and effort but turned down only to be forgotten in vain. It is what future student council members should also keep in mind that it’s definitely not an easygoing position. Even so, it’s that very hard work that makes the members of the student council admirable and respected by other students, and indeed there’s no doubt they deserve them all.
