The Club ETC’s Moment Education “United Nations English Language Day” Coverage

The Tribune, the club responsible for the school's English newspaper, covered the Ted translation club ETC at Michuhol Foreign Language High School. Moment education is a type of campaign to spread awareness about a day with a specific meaning.

ETC is a club that engages in English translation (TED Translation) activities, including lectures and convention translations at Michuhol Foreign Language High School. In line with this purpose, the club organized a campaign to celebrate and spread the United Nations English Language Day. At the moment education, they explained when UN English Language Day is, why it was designated, and what it means. They also used a simple card game to increase interest in the activities and remind them of the day's meaning.

To learn more about the effectiveness and impact of education, we conducted interviews with the students who participated. First, we asked the student Hyorim Lee how learning about the United Nations English Language Day has affected students learning a foreign language. She said it was useful to know about this information because English has a history and is used as the world's international business language. She also said that she could learn about other UN official languages celebrated in addition to UN English Language Day.

Next, we asked the student Hwiyeon Song to share her thoughts about participating in moment education and what she would like to consider particularly if she were to run her moment education based on the experience. She mentioned that playing the English card game was impressive after getting a brief explanation of the UN English Language. She added that she would like to develop a way to attract students. So, she wants to plan her moment education according to it.

Lastly, we asked the club leader, Ahyun Kwon, what kind of skills she could develop (what she learned) by participating in the moment education. She said that the most impressive activity was learning about how the UN English Language Day was designated and why it was designated.  She also said that she could learn that the Paris Agreement was translated together in preparation for the training to promote UN English Language Day. It was not just English used in the agreement, but also the six languages recognized by the United Nations. She said that she was able to improve her English skills by looking for expressions that she had not translated before and translating them, and by learning about expressions used in international conferences beyond her everyday language.
